The Heart Herd
Horses Healing and Being Healed
The Heart Herd is designed to support the care, feeding, and development of rescued horses who go on to become therapy horses.
Heart Herd horses are part of our funded programs, helping both horses and humans gain the patience, attunement, and communication skills necessary for healthy, connected relationships.
Through recurring monthly donations (or a one-time gift), you can:
Sponsor a Heart Herd horse for a week, a month or a year
Honor a friend or loved one with a gift in their name
Remember/memorialize a lost 2-legged or 4-legged companion
Pumpkin and Spice are two recent examples of the more than 40 horses who have been through the ranch, to be healed of trauma and then to help humans heal from trauma as well. Pumpkin and Spice are also part of the Heart Herd, horses available to be sponsored, along with Chance (pictured below)!

Your monthly contribution makes the healing happen, for horses and humans!
What Does Your Contribution Mean to a Sponsored Horse?
$10/month or $120/year pays for grain
$25/month or $300/year pays for hay
$75/month $900/year pays for physical needs: veterinarian, farrier, chiropractor, and more
$165/month or $1980/year pays for boarding, daily care and horse rehab/development
$300/month or $3600/year pays for a horse’s needs for the whole month!
Your sponsorship also means more funding goes directly into therapy services, as programs won’t have to pay for care, upkeep and all that goes with having horses as partners to do this work!
Pumpkin - is a draft pony, a Hafflinger who came to the farm several years ago. She showed up “just a bit thin” but quickly settled in and started gaining weight. She and her “sister” Spice are an excellent team and good member of the working herd.
Spice - is also a draft pony, a Hafflinger who came to the farm with her “sister” Pumpkin from a bad situation and a little thin. In fact, she gained weight so fast we did a pregnancy test on her! Now a happy member of the working herd.
Chance was donated to Heart of Horse Sense when her human, Brenda Dammann, long-time friend of Executive Director Shannon Knapp, passed away in April of 2023. Chance is a very special horse to us all, because of our love of Brenda and her love of horses and equine assisted psychotherapy. Chance is helping people heal daily from trauma, and we get to love on him daily, too!
Malibu Barbie, or Barb for short, has been part of the Working Therapy Herd on and off for several years now. A Tennessee Walking Horse-Draft cross, Barb was working in the mines of Kentucky at one time. She's an old soul who prefers quiet moments of reflection and connection over the hustle and bustle of daily life. She's a source of comfort for those who take the time to listen to her subtle requests and appreciate her reserved nature.

Honor those you love and wish to remember through your monthly Heart Herd support. Nicole Kelley (pictured at left) has been honored by her family in this way after her untimely death. She was an avid horse lover and just beginning to get into the field of Equine Assisted Psychotherapy when she passed.
To similarly honor or remember someone special (2-legged or 4-legged), or to celebrate a friend or relative’s birthday, anniversary or other special occasion with a unique gift, contact Cappy at info@HeartofHorseSense.org.
