Become A Volunteer

Get Involved!

Our organization thrives with the help of our incredible volunteer herd! Volunteers help with tasks such as barn work, farm support, horse care, and much more! Our volunteers also help the organization with events, fundraising, outreach, and education!

No horse experience is necessary to volunteer with us! We will teach you everything you need to know!

Ready to Volunteer?

Step 1: Fill out our Volunteer Pre-Application here!

Step 2: Our volunteer coordinator will reach out to you with any additional questions and enable you to sign up for our upcoming volunteer training cohort!

Step 3: New volunteers must enroll in a complementary six-week Volunteer Training Program. Cohorts meet on Saturdays at our beautiful farm in Leicester, NC. Sessions are free and will teach new volunteers about equine-assisted therapy & learning, farm operations, and the organization’s mission

Upon arrival for your first class, you will be asked to sign our Volunteer Liability and Release Waiver. Signature of this waiver is required in order to attend class and volunteer with us.

Step 4: When all requirements have been met you will become an "active volunteer!" At that time you will be invited to join a private Facebook group to get notified about volunteer activities and events! You will also receive regular updates from our volunteer coordinator

Volunteering typically occurs on Saturdays. Activities include:

  • scrubbing buckets

  • weeding labyrinth

  • cleaning arena office

  • projects to keep the farm shipshape

  • whatever else needs doing!

Volunteering ends with two hours of ”horse time,” including:

  • Assisting with our quarterly Equine Assisted Learning Tours and Demonstrations: Helping with the horses and assisting in the delivery of tours/demonstrations.

  • Learning Natural Horsemanship and Equine Assisted Therapy/Learning with Shannon and Richard Knapp and the Heart of Horse Sense herd.

  • Horse Grooming: Offer grooming or special treatments & vitamins & minerals, take a horse to a sweet spot of clover and hang out, or whatever!
