In the wake of Hurricane Helene, our community in Western North Carolina has been pooling resources and receiving support and donations to help with recovery and supplies, but we are just getting started.
Hurricane Helene’s devastation and its continuing impacts have challenged the people of Western North Carolina in ways never before imagined. Our hearts are heavy over the many homes, businesses, and lives affected by the storm. We will mourn for those whose lives were lost during this disaster and for those whose lives are forever changed. For Heart of Horse Sense, Helene has strengthened our desire to provide key services to survivors of trauma.
In this difficult time, we have watched our community come together in strength, support, and limitless compassion. As a small non-profit, we rely on your donations for our services and our horses. These expenses have not gone away.
We have become a distribution hub for the smaller horse farm owners of our region, with hay and grain brought in from the coast. If you know of any individuals or small orgs that need hay/grain, please ask them to email shannon@heartofhorsesense.org.
We're anticipating a spike in mental health needs as we continue to recover from Hurricane Helene, akin to what we saw during and after COVID when requests for services increased by 75%, and so are gearing up for that. Stay tuned as we set up drop-in mental health breaks with horses by signing up for our newsletter. You can also keep up with our services via Instagram and Facebook.
Please consider donating to Heart of Horse Sense to support our community and our horses. Every little bit helps. We are deeply grateful for our herd and proud to be part of such a generous community.
The communities of Western North Carolina will continue to recover and rebuild, and, as always, Heart of Horse Sense will be here to help.
